I have been struggling with adult acne since my early twenties. I'm in my thirties now and was feeling hopeless until I got my Baby Blue. My acne is triggered by hormones, stress, hair and makeup products, and exposure to gluten. Because these factors are difficult if not impossible to avoid completely, my acne is moderate, persistent, and difficult to treat. Having found little relief from the typical OTC and Rx products, I started looking into alternative treatment methods. When I discovered the Baby Blue online, I was skeptical at first, mainly because of the price tag and the flourish of reviews that made it seem too good to be true. However, after confirming the efficacy of blue light therapy on the Mayo Clinic website, I was willing to give it a go. I've been using my Baby Blue 5-7 times a week since it arrived, and while it hasn't performed miracles, I have definitely seen a reduction in my acne.
BEFORE BABY BLUE: Despite regular cleansing, toning, and moisturizing with soap-free and oil-free products, I had numerous comodones in my t-zone that would neither resolve nor erupt for weeks or sometimes even months at a time. Eventually, they would erupt into either small pimples or painful, red, nodules that once finally healed left ugly red/brown hyper-pigmentation marks. Hair products or wearing headphones at the gym regularly meant I also had little breakouts along my hairline. There was never a day when I didn't have at least two or three active zits on my face.
WITH BABY BLUE: After almost a month of regular use, nearly all of those persistent little white and black heads in my t-zone have disappeared. I no longer break out along my hairline, and have gone back to using some of my favorite hair and makeup products. As far as the mild cystic acne goes, it hasn't gone away completely, but it is greatly improved. I have an active nodule now, but I have been spot treating it with the Baby Blue twice a day to keep it from growing too large. The Baby Blue really helps reduce the pain and swelling caused by the bacteria and the body's natural inflammatory response. This helps me from wanting to try to squeeze the nodule, which I know is bad, but when it hurts, it hurts. Am I right? These days, my really angry zits resolve much faster than before and are less frequent. Often times, I can feel one coming and head it off at the pass with the Baby Blue. If I catch it soon enough it never erupts and resolves itself peacefully. I tend to use the light for longer than the manufacturer recommends, and I never experience any irritation as a result.
WORDS OF CAUTION: Blue light therapy cannot cure acne--nothing can. If you stop using the Baby Blue, it's likely your acne will return. I can tell when I've skipped a day or not taken my time to be thorough. Always clean the device before and after you use it because the blue light doesn't kill bacteria directly. It releases free radicals in the skin that are responsible for destroying the microbes. If you don't clean the device, you could be rubbing active p.acne all over your face. I bought a big box of alcohol swabs that work great. Also, there is research out there that links macular degeneration to prolonged exposure to the light waves found in blue light. I suppose you could use tanning goggles. I don't own any, so I just keep my eyes closed when I use my Baby Blue and never look directly at it while it's on.
Finally and in contradiction to many of the positive reviews I have read, I still don't believe the Baby Blue is the silver bullet for controlling acne. At least, that has not been my experience. Instead I think of it as an integral part of my skincare regimen. What follows is my daily routine so you can see how I have incorporated the light therapy:
MORNING
1. Wash with soap-free cleanser
2. Tone with witch hazel
3. Spot treat with Baby Blue if needed and time allows
4. Moisturize with oil-free SPF 15 lotion
EVENING
1. Wash with soap-free cleanser
2. Exfoliate/remove remaining makeup residue with Clarisonic
3. Treat full face with Baby Blue light therapy; spot treat for additional time as needed
4. Moisturize with oil-free lotion
