Previously, the Braun SE 7181 WD Silk Epil 7 Epilator Xpressive Pro, Orange/Copper was offered in Vine. Not in my newsletter, though. But I needed a new epilator, and after reading the reviews, decided to try it.
This item is exactly the same, except it has some extra covers and a shaving head. The extra covers are for delicate areas. What they really do is cover most of the epilator head, so you can access smaller spots, like your upper lip. Unfortunately, only the center of the epilator head is exposed, which makes it difficult to reach your upper lip. Too bad they didn't place that opening off-center. The shaving head is pretty drugstore standard with the same old flimsy foil. I hate those foils. They fall off too easily! The shaving head does help finish up strays and picks up fine hair, but if I want to be THAT smooth, I use a Double Edge Safety Razor. I think these extras are overkill, especially considering how much more this costs than the epilator alone.
Now, for the epilator. This is bar none the fastest and best I've ever used, and I've used them since the original Epilady came out. Some of the finer features:
Pivoting head - easier to maneuver vs other epilators.
Ergonomic shape - easier to hold.
Speed - Slow is fast. Fast is really fast, less than half the time required using other epilators.
Light - Finally! Do you know, I have been sitting on the floor with a plant light aimed at my legs so I could see if I missed a spot? Excellent!
Massage head - gentler than express head because it keeps the tweezers farther from your skin.
Express head - the one I use the most, gets really close to the skin. Removes more hair faster than the massage head.
Battery - holds a charge for a long, long time!
Charger - charges in less than an hour straight out of the box
Immersible - to me, the best part of this is that you can clean the thing with soap and running water.
Speed choices - not exclusive to this product, but nice to have
I've used this wet and dry for my legs, armpits, and facial hair. I get best results using it dry. It leaves the skin on my face red, but only for a couple of hours, and it's a lot easier than plucking.
I do have a couple of tips for technique. First, make sure you're holding the epilator so the head is at a 90 degree angle to the area you're de-hairing. What I mean is, don't let it lay back or off to the left or right. Otherwise, it won't reach the hairs. This is true of all epilators. You do not have to stretch your skin like you do with electric razors. You may need to say, around your knees, but I hardly ever stretch my skin. You're not shaving with this thing. You're yanking hair out. You don't need to stretch the skin between your eyebrows to pluck those hairs. Stretch your skin only if necessary. Do not press the epilator against your skin. Hold it gently above your skin. It doesn't need to touch your skin. It only needs to grab hairs. You don't really have to worry about working "against the grain," either. If you hold it slightly away from your skin, you can simply work it in small circles. Don't try to move too fast. If you zip it from ankle to knee, you're going to miss a lot of hairs.
Now to the pain: This hurts more than other epilators I've used. That's because it yanks the hair faster than any other. For me, it doesn't truly hurt, but it's important to note in my review. If you have tried other epilators and gave up because it hurt, do not buy this one. If you haven't tried epilators, I recommend the aforementioned version. This one is too expensive. If you're just plain looking for a new epilator, and you want wet/dry plus electric razor head, go ahead and pull the trigger.
I nearly forgot about the wipes. Forget about the wipes. They have a bit of moisturizer, silicone, anti-irritants and fragrance. They're pleasant, but they slick up the hairs, and reduce the efficacy of the epilator.
